This image began as a gift for my friend, Nazneen, and went through many iterations. It is cropped from the 1880s photograph below of Bheel women and girls carrying water on their heads, in Kathiawar, in the region of India now known as Gujarat. I added color and some joyful touches--bright pink sneakers, dragonflies, funky shades, and a lovely flower from my garden. I also used a keffiyeh pattern because, well, FREE PALESTINE.
