The original black and white photograph, below, shows Susan (or Susie) Bruce (1850-1866) in Auburn, New York. Susie was a student of Emily Howland, an abolitionist who taught formerly enslaved people to read. Susan Bruce had to withdraw from Oberlin College due to an undiagnosed illness that took her life soon after.
