I was drawn to how unimpressed Rosina (also known as Rosa) looked in this photograph. The caption--Rebecca, Charley & Rosa. Slave Children from New Orleans--was not what I was expecting. Rosa's father was a soldier in the Confederate Army.
These white-passing children were photographed, and cards made with these images were sold and traded to raise money for the education of emancipated children. The images shocked white people in the North. These were children who looked just their own children, and were enslaved.
