My auntie. Alawiya Mohamed Abdelaziz. Dr. Alawiya Mohamed Abdelaziz. She studied in Hungary (where I was born) and eventually became a doctor. Mama Alawiya lived in Saudi Arabia with her husband and twins, practicing medicine (in niqab, as required). When the ban on women driving was lifted, Mama Alawiya started learning to drive. A small car accident took Mama Alawiya too soon. We miss her. But this photograph of her looking gorgeous and rocking that beautiful afro will live forever.
